KLANGBAD INFO

If one were to capture the release policy of the Klangbad-label in a nutshell, one could say: no stereotypes. It seems that there is no such thing as the typical Klangbad-sound.Although it would not be hard to create a “sound of the family” against the backdrop of the Krautrock icons that faust are. And in the sense of a “corporate identity” do exactly the same thing with each new release. People in marketing think that way. Creative people don't.
With Klangbad, Cornelia Paul and Hans Joachim Irmler have created their own creative biotope. At the core of this creative cell they are themselves. Their built-in studio plays a leading role in all their artistic processes. It's here that Hans Joachim Irmler together polishes and hones future releases. It is also the place where the dialogue between the artists and their label takes place. Not the “product” and its marketing according to certain trends are the focus of attention, but the creative process. Like faust as a band have always done The research and exploration of new sounds that the band started, is now carried on by the label.
So in a way the sound of Klangbad does exist, but not as a fulfillment of stereotypical clichés. On the contrary, it is the incalculable, the non-stereotypical and the surprising element which is at the core of Klangbad's catalogue. Intricate Psychedelia, Rock with a cutting edge, intelligent HipHop, Electronica – the curiosity is boundless and they are not afraid of exploring new horizons.
Faust, Circle, Dälek, Ole Lukkøye, Kangaroo Moon and the others: as varied as their individual music may be, everything sounds original and unmistakable. Because boredom is death. Welcome to the sound of Klangbad!
In 1996, the musicians of faust were fed up with the nuisance of dealing with profit-orientated record companies. Out of this realisation, Klangbad was born. A musical project by faust of the same name in a swimming pool helped to find the name for the new label. With FIRST STEPS, Klangbad presents a foray into its release and further. Some tracks on this compilation are unreleased in any other format. Thus FIRST STEPS is not only a stocktaking of Klangbad's recent output, but a further step in a new direction.

Will man versuchen, die Veröffentlichungspolitik des Klangbad-Labels möglichst knapp zu umreissen, könnte man sagen: Keine Formate. Den typischen Klangbad-Labelsound gibt es anscheinend nicht. Obwohl es nicht allzu schwer wäre, vor dem Hintergrund der Krautrock-Ikonen von FAUST einen “Klang der Familie” zu schaffen. Und im Sinne der Corporate Identity mit neuen Veröffentlichungen möglichst treffsicher in die gleiche Kerbe zu hauen. Marketingstrategen denken so, kreative Menschen eher nicht.
Cornelia Paul und Hans Joachim Irmler haben sich mit Klangbad ihr eigenes kreatives Biotop errichtet – Kern der Kreativzelle sind sie selbst. Das hausinterne Tonstudio spielt bei allen schöpferischen Pro zessen eine entscheidende Rolle. Unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Hans Joachim Irmler wird hier an den Releases gefeilt; hier findet ein wichtiger Teil des Austauschs zwischen Künstlern und Label statt. Nicht das Produkt und seine trendgerechte Veröffentlichung stehen im Vordergrund, sondern die schöpferischen Prozesse. So wie Faust als Band immer schon Klangforschung betrieben haben, führt nun Klangbad den Forschungsauftrag als Label weiter.
Es gibt ihn also sehr wohl, den Klangbad-Labelsound. Bloss nicht als Bedienung immer gleicher Klischees. Es ist im Gegenteil das Unberechenbare, das Unformatierte und Überraschende, was den Klangbad-Katalog ausmacht. Verwobene Psychedelika, harscher cutting edge Rock, intelligent HipHop, Elektronik – die Neugier ist gross und Berührungsängste gibt es keine. Faust, Circle, Dälek, Ole Lukkøye, Kangaroo Moon und die anderen; so unterschiedlich ihre Musik auch sein mag, alles klingt auf seine Art spannend und unverwechselbar. Denn Langeweile wäre der Tod. Willkommen im Klangkosmos von Klangbad! 1996 hatten die Musiker der deutschen Krautrock-Gruppe Faust die Nasen voll davon, sich mit profitorientierten Plattenfirmen herumzuärgern. Das war die Geburtstunde von Klangbad. Ein gleichnamiges Faust-Liveprojekt in eitlem Schwimmbad half bei der Findung des Titels für die neue Plattenmarke. Mit FIRST STEPS präsentiert Klangbad einen Streifzug durch seine releases und mehr – eine Selbstreflektion der Plattenfirma. Einiges auf dem Sampler ist unveröffentlicht und wird es auch bleiben. So ist FIRST STEPS nicht bloss eine Dokumentation des eigenen Schaffens sondern ein weiterer Schritt auf neuem Terrain.

Ole Lukkøye are part of the Russian underground. The band was formed by Boris Bardash and Andrej Lavrinenko in St. Petersburg in 1989. With the release of their second album “Toomze”, the band showed the high ambition they aspired to: It's a concoction of British ArtRock, musical influences from all parts of the former Soviet Union and elements of ambient and trance which makes this music so intriguing. The group fuses traditional Russian styles (for example that of the Tuva-region in southern Siberia) with current western rhythms and sounds. The result, a dark and shamanistic psychedelic trance rock with much percussion and many acoustic instruments, opens a door between east and west. Ole Lukkøye knew the early albums of Faust, which found their way into the Russian music scene and acquired a cult following there. Thus the contact was established and after a meeting, the two parties agreed that Ole Lukkøye's fourth album “Crystal Crow Bar” was to be produced at Faust's studios in the spring of 2000. The result of this collaboration is no less mystic and enchanting than the band's preceding LPs.

Ole Lukkøye sind ein Stück russischer Underground. Boris Bardash und Andrej Lavrinenko gründeten die Band 1989 in St.Petersburg. Spätestens mit der Veröffentlichung ihres zweiten Albums “Toomze” dokumentierten Ole Lukkøye ihren hochambitionierten Ansatz. Es ist eine Melange aus britischem ArtRock, musikalischen Einflüssen aus allen Teilen der früheren Sowjetunion und Elementen aus Ambient und Trance, das den besonderen Reiz dieser Musik ausmacht. Traditionelle russische Stile, beispielsweise aus der Tuva-Region im süd lichen Sibirien, verschmilzt die Gruppe mit aktuellen, ausgesprochen westlichen Rhythmen und Sounds. Das Ergebnis, dunkel-schamanistischer Psychedelic-Trance-Rock mit viel Perkussion und akustischen Instrumenten, öffnet eine Tür zwischen Osten und Westen. Ole Lukkøye kannten die frühen Kultalben von Faust, die ihren Weg auch in russische Szenekreise gefunden hatten. Der Kontakt war hergestellt und man kam überein, das vierte Album “Crystal Crow Bar” Frühjahr 2000 im Faust-Studio zu produzieren. Das Ergebnis dieser Zusammenarbeit ist nicht minder mystisch und berückend als die Vorgängeralben.
